YA Book Review Flashfall by Jenny Moyer

Flashfall by Jenny Moyer
Orion is a young woman living in a world dominated by the Flash Curtain, a highly radioactive wall that divides her outpost, number five, from the protected city of Alara. Orion is a very skilled miner who helps harvest Cirium, the only element that protects humans from the radiation of the flash fall.
The congress has promised that any miner who collects at least 400 grams of Cirium will be given free passage to Alara, where life is rumored to be much better than the brutal conditions of outpost five. But after run-ins with the post’s viscious commander, Orion begins to doubt the government’s promises, and she unwittingly begins a rebellion that might have disastrous consequences as she tries to find a passage to a better life.
This is intended to be a fast-paced read. Think of it as similar to Pierce Brown’s Red Rising or Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games novels, just without a lot of social commentary getting in the way. Flashfall provides cliffhanger after cliffhanger -- no pun intended since Orion and crew are miners who do dangle off cliffs. Give this title to reluctant readers who like an escape from the modern world.
