Norse Mythology by Neal Gaiman
Norse Mythology by Neal Gaiman Gaiman is a master storyteller. He has used mythology in many of his books, like American Gods and Anansi Boys, and of course his early work was as a graphic novelist with the Sandman series.
In Norse Mythology, Gaiman tackles that part of mythology that many of us aren’t quite as familiar with -- the Norse Gods. If you like the recent run of Marvel comic-based movies, you will likely love this book. These are the myths on which many of the characters and stories in the Thor movies are based. It’s tough to not picture Chris Hemsworth as Thor in these stories; in fact, if you listen to the audio book on Overdrive, author Neal Gaiman does a wonderful impersonation of Hemsworth’s Thor.
The trickster Loki is a prominent figure in these stories, as is Loki and Thor’s father Odin, and of course I pictured Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins in those roles as I read the book. Gaiman takes us from the creation myth of Asgard and the nine worlds through Ragnarok, the twilight of the Gods, and finally into rebirth following the death of the Norse Gods.
This is both fascinating and funny, as Gaiman plays Thor as infinitely strong but not very bright, and Loki as the master manipulator. It’s a light, fun, and quick read that I recommend for just about everyone. Check out Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.
