Literature Review: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

Stack up this one and all the sequels and enjoy some great reading!
Imagine picking up your copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte only to find that Jane-- our heroine-- is no longer in the book because she's been kidnapped and is being held ransom by a crime sindicate.  Thursday Next, a LiteraTec word crime detective, is on the job to get Jane back into her book before any reader notices she's missing.  This original premise is just one of the many creative devices Jasper Fforde uses in the first of his Thursday Next books.  Set in England in 1985, the books give us an alternate reality where time-travel is common, books and literature are all the rage (who needs TV when you can attend an audience-participation production of Shakespeare's Richard III?), and the government is run by a corporation.  This is a must-read for any English major or well-read person.  The literary allusions are virtually uncountable, and they merely add to the colorful and hypnotic narrative Fforde weaves.  These books are pure genius.
